A BRIEF HISTORY

For many years, the students living in our community, had to travel to Germantown or into center city if they wished to continue their education beyond grade school level. Many of their parents found this a financial burden which they were unable to assume, and as a result, the children were denied the opportunity of additional schooling. This stimulated the interest of the community in having a secondary school established in this immediate area. Through the combined efforts of civic and fraternal organizations, The Board of Public Education selected the site at Ridge Avenue and Fountain Street for a secondary school. On February 1, 1924, the building was opened for 7th, 8th and 9th grade students. From this beginning as a junior high school, it has grown into a secondary school accommodating grades 9 through 12. As the student population increased, an enlarged program of studies became available which made it possible for students to prepare not only for college, but for business and industrial occupations as well. Since this school has been organized, there have been thirteen principals: Dr. Leslie B. Seely, Mr. J. Ellwood Calhoun, Mr. Edwin Y. Montanye, Mr. Theodore S. Rowland, Mr. Price B. Engle, Dr. Luther F. Waidelich, Mr. Wilbur C. DeTurk, Mr. Claude V. Shoenly, Mr. Robert G. Hoffman, Mr. Anthony V. Giampetro, Mr. Liston C. Knowles, Mr. Henry D. Marmer, Dr. Rebecca Mitchell, Ms. Florence Johnson (Interim Principal) and Mr. Richard H. Jenkins, our present principal. The emblem of the school is an American Indian, representing members of the tribes who used the Ridge as their trail. Our Honor Society commemorates the memory of John Kelpius, last of the hermit monks who settled along the Wissahickon. Our school motto, “Roxborough High School, A School for Success Where Excellence is our Only Option,” epitomizes the goal of both our staff and our students. It was through the interest of Mr. John Westerman, a neighbor living near the school, and Mr. Frank Kenworthy, our councilman at that time, that we were able to acquire the ground for our present athletic field. The property is now called Westerman Field.

DVOC has been performing at RHS since January 2008.
