Kevin Durkin's 2018 Summer Opera Festival Roles: Dr. Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore, Talpa in Il Tabarro, and Wagner in Faust
What are you looking forward to most about preparing your role? Dr. Dulcamara is such an absolute rollicking joy to sing. I’m looking the most forward to being with the entire cast so that I am able to play off of them. With a comedic role like Dulcamara you need to play off the energy of the rest of the cast. If you had to choose a pop song that best describes the character you are portraying, what would it be? “Circus”by Britney Spears, because Dulcamara is the ring leader for the madness that occurs in the opera. He commands full attention in the circus that is “L'elisir d'amore!” What do you think will be the most challenging part about preparing your role? The patter! It is exhausting! However, I adore it. I sound so boring because I love this role so much! Why do you love to sing opera? I love singing opera because it is the most pure, unfettered use of the human voice at its highest glory. Opera is also so full of drama! As a naturally dramatic person, I was immediately drawn towards the operatic world. Aside from singing, name a talent/stupid human trick/hobby others might not be aware of .... I teach college writing, and I am a former competitive figure skater! See Kevin as Dr. Dulcamara in L'elisir d'amore, Talpa in Il Tabarro, and Wagner in Faust.
